Dr. Gelareh Rahbar Offers Porcelain Dental Crown Treatment to Patients in San Francisco
A dental crown is often the last line of defense to save a tooth that is damaged by severe decay or injury. Left in a weakened state, the tooth becomes susceptible to more damage until it must be extracted. Dr. Gelareh Rahbar uses dental crowns to strengthen the structure of the tooth and help prevent further decay by encasing the healthy portion with a cap made of porcelain, metal, or a combination of the two materials. She also uses dental crowns to protect a tooth after a root canal, the placement of a large filling, to anchor a dental bridge, or to cover an implant. With a soothing chair-side manner and a passion for improving the aesthetics and oral health of her patients, Dr. Rahbar helps to ensure that the dental crown procedure is a stress-free experience. The Dental Crown Procedure
The procedure to place a dental crown occurs in two parts over two separate visits to the San Francisco office of Dr. Rahbar. During the first visit, Dr. Rahbar will examine your tooth and take x-rays to assess the total damage. Teeth with severe decay may require a root canal to clear the tooth of infection. After injecting local anesthesia into your gums, Dr. Rahbar will file the tooth down to accommodate the porcelain crown. An impression – to be sent to the lab – is made of the tooth and the teeth on either side, to ensure that the crown will blend with the surrounding teeth and not obstruct your overall bite. While your porcelain crown is being crafted in a local, Bay Area laboratory, Dr. Rahbar will cover the tooth with a temporary crown.
It is important to keep in mind that your temporary crown does not provide an accurate impression of what your permanent crown will look like. Precautions must be made during the interim to ensure that the temporary crown is not accidentally removed from the mouth or broken. You should floss carefully and avoid sticky or chewy foods that may adhere to the temporary crown.
Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return to Dr. Rahbar’s office to have it placed. If you miss this appointment, the process may have to start over, at additional cost to you. After removing the temporary crown, Dr. Rahbar will make sure that the permanent crown fits. If so, she will numb the tooth with local anesthetic and use dental cement to affix the permanent porcelain dental crown to the prepared site.
